Physiotherapy Service Description

Physiotherapy Service is a recognized specialization of medical practice with emphasis on physical therapy. It has become one of the fastest growing specialties in the health care industry. In fact, it is the fastest growing area of health care in the U.S.A. This article will focus on Physiotherapy Service and evaluate its role in patient care, its value as a specialty area of health care, and what patients need to know about this important and cost effective service. You can read more and know what a physiotherapist can offer.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to compare the effect of a standard 6-week physiotherapy service, versus an alternative, non physiotherapy service, on total duration of stay, functioning independence, gait, balance and mobility of individuals undergoing in-patient physiotherapy, as compared to a standard 5- day service. Participants were adults with minor orthopedic injuries with a previous history of chronic low back pain or stiffness. As part of the comparison between the two types of services, specific metrics were selected from a wide range of perspectives. These included, duration of stay in the hospital, the percentage of days discharged from hospital, the percentage of days spent in a chair, percentage of days not improving, the number of specialist physicians consulted, number of discharge appointments, number of specialist referrals and number of new procedures. It was found that patients completing the 6-week physiotherapy service had the longest amount of improvement and longest period of time in recovery.

Tables 2 through 4 represent the characteristics of patients who completed the physiotherapy service and the characteristics of those who chose alternative care. The number of patients admitted to the hospital was higher for those completing the chiropractic care than for those completing the regular care. Patients in the chiropractic group had significantly higher rates of improvement and had the fewest number of discharges from the hospital during the six-week study. Chiropractic patients discharged after the six-week period had more improvement (p=.0004) as did those discharged on an outpatient basis. In the patient sample, those completing the chiropractic care had the longest amount of improvement and longest period of time in recovery.

Physiotherapists are trained to provide care for their patients and should be fully trained and experienced in the methods of physiotherapy. These professionals have an academic education as well as a professional degree from an approved medical school and graduate level training in physiotherapy. They must have at least eight years of experience working as a physiotherapist. A large majority of physiotherapists are now trained as physical therapists, since they are typically required to participate in a wide range of additional functions while working with patients. Physiotherapists should be licensed through the Texas State Board of Physical Therapy Education and fulfill other licensing requirements as required by their state. It is important that the physiotherapist understands the importance of communication with the patient when providing physiotherapy services. A combination of verbal and nonverbal cues are used to convey messages to the patient. The information given may be in the form of a message as a quote or as directions for exercises. The words used need to be precise, specific, clear, and concise. The message needs to be delivered with the confidence of the patient.

There are no strict guidelines for the qualifications of physiotherapy therapists. However, research therapists, chiropractors, athletic trainers, massage therapists, physical therapist, and registered nurses should have a minimum of four years of study, experience, and certification in the specific areas of interest identified through their studies. This information should be shared with the research facility where the patients are going to be treated to allow them to find the best physiotherapist for their needs. The selection process for selecting the best physiotherapist takes into account many factors including the qualifications and experience of the physiotherapist, the satisfaction of the client, and the level of service expected.
